What started the Headwaters Relay? Where did the idea come from?

What equipment does each team need?
- Camping equipment, unless you plan to stay in a motel each night
- Enough liquid, food, and first aid resources to support the team's runners each day. THERE ARE NO AID STATIONS ALONG THE ROUTE.
- At least one high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle (most SUV's do the trick)
- At least two vehicles for all three days
- At least one runner who is comfortable running rocky, steep mountain trails
- Runners who are solid/experienced distance runners, with a solid distance base under them. THIS RELAY IS NOT EASY FOR THE FIRST TIME RUNNER!
